What does Mother's Day and Father's Day mean to YOU?

I was shocked to hear a mother recently say "For all that I've done in the last 2 weeks, I deserve a huge Mother's Day present".
This mother didn't mean that her kids better get to onto crafting up a storm either, she meant(and no doubt demanded) that her husband best buy her a big ticket item.
What had she done in the last 2 weeks?  The family had moved house, so packing and unpacking her household is what I'm assuming, but nothing above and beyond the role of mother or wife.
This made me think....how many others out there are infact like her?
What is Mother's Day and Father's Day to MY family?
Growing up, it was always simple.... Us kids made, or attempted to make, breaky in bed for Mum  and Dad, and gave them our handmade gifts.  If not homemade, the gifts were always something of a token, or useful.
I loved that, and Mum and Dad always treasured their presents, even if they weren't so sure what they were or they didn't look so great!  It was from their children, with love!
So now that I have my own little family and am a gift recipient on that special day as well as a helper of gift making on Father's Day, I am super excited about handmade goodies from my child!!
The card Tyler got for Father's Day 2009.
A Lion JackJack!
The lion mane is made out of my thumb prints using orange ink.
Tyler and my Dad's presents from JackJack for Father's Day 2009.
The lion mane is cut outs of his hand shape!
Other then these, I gave Tyler a packet of Skittles lollies(his fave), and my Dad a packet of choc coated fruit and nuts(his fave)....just a token ;)
Father's Day 2008....Tyler's first!
I gave him a Melbourne Storm scarf, with JackJack having a little buba version, so cute ;)
This was actually Tyler's first birthday as a Daddy...when Jack was around 8wks old!
I made a wall hanging of Jack's feet and hand prints, pics of the boys together, and a poem.  Plus he also got a book about Daddy's ;)
Mother's Day 2009, my first!!
This is JackJack trying my present on for size...a pair of "bogan boots"....knee high uggy's ;)

Inlight of hearing this other mother, and how appalled it made me feel, I actually ended up having a chat with Tyler....wanting to make sure he knew that I certainly wasn't expecting a store bought present.....I just would love something him and his little fella put some love into, making themselves ;)

How do YOU do Mother's and Father's Day?

I really enjoyed receiving my home made gifts when you were all little or the funny little things you bought at the mothers/fathers day stalls at school. I think I still have a few treasures in my dressing table draw. mothers and fathers day is far too commercialised. it should be just a small token from the kids and preferrably home made things.
it was fun having brekky in bed on mothers day yummo!

Well this will be my first Mothers Day as a mumma and seeing as my little fella isnt exactly crafting age yet ( and his dad isnt exactly the crafting type ) i'm thinking my gift will be store bought.
That being said i dont care what it is or how much it costs, because it will be from my son and fiance and its the thought and the love that will have gone into the decision that will mean something to me...

Well said Jen....we dont do a lot here to celebrate and just small gifts here and there(though there are a few people in both our families who would act like the woman you spoke of...and have in the past...when celebrations did not consist of something major at the center!)Being a mum is a gift in itself...each day offers something special (not always easy to see but there)...I havnt given much thought to mothers day this year....i might cook a roast lunch and have my mum over...that would be nice!

Yeah Amy, as you can see....my first Mother's Day pressie was store bought...but slippers are oh so mother's day-ish they were perfect!!
Tyler isn't so crafty in terms of simply kiddy crafts, so that's why I wanted to have the chat with him and remind him of my values on this occassion. I'd hate for him to feel he has to buy a gift coz he feels craftily retarded or anything! lol It's all beautiful stuff in a Muma's eyes when it comes from love ;)
